UN official raises the alarm on the peak of Covid-19 cases in Gaza

United Nations, Oct 26 (Prensa Latina) The UN special coordinator for the peace process in the Middle East, Nickolay Mladenov, raised the alarm on Monday on the peak of Covid-19 cases in Gaza, occupied Palestinian territory and under Israel's blockade.

The high representative also showed great concern at the UN Security Council about the long-term damage that the pandemic will cause to the Palestinian economy and social cohesion, including the impacts on education and for the upcoming generations.

As the peak of Covid-19 cases grows and its aftermaths pile up, both Palestinians and Israelis are feeling the effects, Mladenov pointed out.

Meanwhile, in the intervention sent to the Security Council, the Foreign Minister of the Palestinian Authority (PA), Riad Malki, called for significant actions to be taken to end the Tel Aviv government’s occupation of that land and devise a solution by both States.

‘It is absurd to consider that Israel’s right to security could justify the occupation and oppression of an entire nation for decades, or justify the denial of our right to self-determination and to a sovereign and independent State, or justify the denial of our own right to safety.’

Some claim that the Palestinian side does not want negotiations, when it is Israel who tries, on the ground every day, to illegally pre-empt talks on all issues related to the final status of Palestine, he observed.
