Parliament of Canada listens to popular clamor against US blockade

Ottawa, Oct 22 (Prensa Latina) Canadian parliamentarians listened to a popular petition with a direct request to the national authorities to initiate a diplomatic demand before the government of the United States in favor of lifting the economic blockade against Cuba.

The critic for Foreign Relations of the Bloc Québécois party, Stéphane Bergeron, presented the proposal before the House of Commons, initiated by citizens of the province of Quebec last April and which includes the signatures of 577 Canadians.

Ottawa has regularly expressed its position against the US policy of blockading Cuba, which has prolonged for over six decades, and through which the Government of Donald Trump prohibited nations of Latin America from export medical material to Cuba.

The text recalls By way of contrast that Cuba sent health professionals to various countries in the world to help combat the current Covid-19 pandemic.

In these times of health crisis, the United States must end its threats against Cuba and Venezuela, a press release from the Bloc Québécois in support of the request now presented to Canadian parliamentarians highlighted.

The action coincided with the presentation by the Cuban Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodriguez, of Cuba’s report under resolution 74/7 of the United Nations General Assembly, entitled ‘The need to end the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba,’ as per a note published on the website of the embassy of Cuba in Canada.

The aforementioned Cuban report denounces ‘the unprecedented upsurge of this cruel and illegal policy, even taking advantage of the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, which in the last year alone has caused losses to Cuba in the order of 5,5570.3 millions of dollars’.
