In his video message to the ministerial conference on the central Sahel, he stressed that violence in that area is increasing and women and girls are particularly vulnerable.

The region is at a breaking point and humanitarian needs in the border area between Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger are reaching unprecedented levels, he said.

Internal displacement has increased 20-fold in less than two years and the number of families facing hunger has tripled, while climate change threatens people’s livelihoods, he said.

Covid-19 makes this scenario worse, Guterres said, and called for addressing this downward spiral with a renewed push for peace and reconciliation.

As the UN chairman noted, there is an urgent need to make space for vital humanitarian assistance and investment in development and people.

The Sahel is a microcosm of global risks converging in one region, a warning signal for all and requiring urgent attention and resolution.

It also needs much more humanitarian aid, which does not solve the problem of violence but saves lives, he said.

Guterres recalled his call for an immediate global ceasefire, which is crucial for the people of the central Sahel.
