Iraqi mobilization units are awaiting timeline of U.S. retreat

Some 40 groups are part of al-Hashd al-Shaabi which, due to their decisive role in the strategic victory against the Islamic State, have been part of the Iraqi Armed Forces since 2016.

This formation of irregular is keeping a cease-fire pending that the North American abandonment of the national territory is effective.

However, leaders of the groups announced that in case of non-compliance by the Pentagon they will restart operations against US interests in the Arab country.

During the last months, US positions in Iraq have been under fire from some factions of al-Hashd al-Shaabi, especially the embassy of the northern country and an office located around the international airport.

Attacks against the Americans in Iraq escalated after the Pentagon assassinated Iranian General Qassem Soleimani and the deputy commander of the Popular Mobilization Units, Abu Mahdi al-Mohandes in Baghdad last January.

The Iraqi Foreign Ministry announced in recent days the creation of that committee to coordinate the departure of the US military, although the White House is reluctant to make that move.

Iraq is considered a strategic key point for the Pentagon in its campaign against Iran and as a base for incursions into Syria from where it began stealing oil, according to reports from Damascus.
