Pope considers hunger as a disgrace to humanity

Rome, 16 Oct (Prensa Latina) Pope Francis on Friday expressed that hunger is not only a tragedy, but also a shame for humanity.

In an audiovisual message addressed to the members of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on the occasion of its 75th anniversary, Pope Francis said the present crisis proves the need for policies and concrete actions to wipe hunger out in the world.

During his communication at the FAO-organized event on the occasion of ‘World Food Day’, Pope Francis recalled the main cause of this scourge is the unequal distribution of the fruits of the earth, in addition to the lack of investment in agriculture, the physical impacts of climate change and the hightened conflicts in different areas of the planet.

On the other hand, Pope Francis said that tons of food are thrown away, and after pointing out the impossibility of remaining insensitive or paralyzed in front of this reality, he pointed out that ‘we are all responsible’.

Referring to solutions to crack down this scourge, Pope Francis noted that sometimes the dialectic or ideological debates ‘take us far from achieving this goal and we allow our brothers and sisters to continue dying for lack of food.

In Pope’s say, a courageous decision would be to create a world fund to definitively wipe out hunger and help poorest countries´ development with the money spent on arms and other military expenses.
