Spain urges the international community to watch Bolivia’s elections

Madrid, Oct 15 (Prensa Latina) Spain's Unidas Podemos (United We Can) leftist alliance urged on Thursday the international community to watch out the development of upcoming Sunday's elections in Bolivia, called by the de facto government imposed after a military coup.

On a press briefing, the UP deputy spokesperson in the Congress of Deputies, Enrique Santiago, extended that call to the European Union (EU) and the progressive coalition government of Pedro Sanchez, of which this alliance is part.

Santiago and other members of his parliamentary group presented a proposal to the Lower House on Thursday to demand that the Spanish executive be more involved in the defense of democracy in Latin America and in its electoral processes.

They asked the EU and the Sanchez administration to be especially vigilant with the elections in Bolivia, arranged by a de facto government, which in 2019 illegally threw President Evo Morales from power, having forced him to leave the country, they assured.

‘Not satisfied with so, they disabled the first candidacy with which Morales’ party, the MAS (Movement Towards Socialism), wanted to appear in these new elections and with much effort they were finally allowed to regularize another different candidacy,’ Santiago censured.

He denounced that as occurs in other Latin American nations, these disqualification techniques are part of that legal war to try to expel leftist organizations from the elections, and thus be able to vary the real will of the citizens when it comes to freely choosing their representatives.
