The date also serves to assess the birds’ role in the integrity of the ecosystems that support natural cycles, as essential elements for the survival and well-being of all life on the planet.

This will be an opportunity to emphasize the need for the conservation of migratory birds and their habitats, and to raise awareness of the threats they face, their ecological importance and the need to cooperate to conserve them.

Thanks to their existence, a perfect balance can be achieved, thus avoiding the spread of plagues that affect the health of human beings.

This day is celebrated twice a year, coinciding with the great migrations of birds: in spring and autumn (May and October), since the United Nations Organization proclaimed in 2006 that the double avian migration should be commemorated every year.

The number of birds that migrate is very large: storks, cranes, swallows, flamingos, swifts, the European turtle dove, ducks, geese and others, which generally move less and less.

Among the reasons why these biannual movements do not occur is the rise in temperatures due to climate change, and because it is increasingly easier to find food.

According to National Geographic, there are about 18,000 species of birds in the world, which make up a large percentage of the living beings that inhabit the earth, and if they begin to disappear, ecosystems would undergo irreversible changes and it would be the beginning of the end of a planet that must be taken care of.
