A statement from the entity adds that this is the work of multinationals seeking to empty the waters of the continent during the pandemic.

Meanwhile, the report says, traditional fishermen can hardly go out to do their job.

The report adds that countries such as Senegal, Mauritania and Gambia are the most affected, when their governments were forced to distribute emergency aid to subsidize basic foodstuffs due to the economic paralysis.

Measures to deal with the disease prevent fishermen from going out to sea at the height of the fishing season (January to July).

However, Greenpeace stresses that these traditional fishermen are facing unfair competition from multinationals, with modern boats and taking advantage of the stoppages due to the pandemic.

The document circulates this Friday under the title Dizziness: while West Africa is sealed by Covid-19, its waters remain open to plundering. During the aforementioned months at least eight industrial fishing vessels participated in activities in Senegalese waters.

In April of this year, 56 foreign industrial fishing vessels applied for a license to work in Senegalese waters, a number that outraged and mobilized Senegalese fishermen and their civil organizations.
