Hua Chunying, spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, explained that the country signed a few hours ago an agreement with the Global Alliance for Vaccination (GAVI) on joining the project.

As indicated, this is an important step in favor of public health and honors the commitment made to make domestically-produced drugs available to all humanity.

China, she added, wants to ensure equitable access for developing countries to safe, appropriate and effective vaccines, and to that end it decided to join COVAX.

Hua added that Beijing will also take advantage of its accession to the initiative to strengthen cooperation with other states in that field and reiterated the will to contribute more to the fight against the pandemic.

The COVAX initiative was promoted by the World Health Organization and incorporates many Covid-19 vaccine projects that are or are approaching phase three of human clinical trials.

China has 11 drugs in various stages of research, four of which are undergoing final testing, with no significant adverse effects for the time being.
