The new legislation regulates the conservation of geological heritage, conceptualizes what a geological sample is, regulates its export, and creates the National Geoparks Committee, Enrique Castellanos, director of Geology at the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM), said in a press briefing.

This national legislative framework becomes an instrument to protect nature, and among its strategic lines are the promotion, conservation and use of the country’s geological heritage, which is made up of geosites, geoparks and geological samples, Castellanos said.

The regulation defines geosites as those places where characteristic and representative geological features of geodiversity can be observed, while geoparks are those geographical areas where important geological sites are managed with an integrative, cultural and community approach.

The National Geoparks Committee will be the advisory body of the MINEM minister and it will be made up of the Ministry of Economy and Planning, the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Higher Education, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, the Institute of Hydraulic Resources and the Institute of Physical Planning, Castellanos noted.
