Vietnam’s economy grows 2.12 percent from January to September

Hanoi, Sep 30 (Prensa Latina) Vietnam's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increased 2.12% in the first nine months of 2020, compared to last year, the lowest growth in two decades, the General Department of Statistics reported.

Department Head Nguyen Thi Huong pointed out that it is a good result considering that few economies in the region and the rest of the world have barely grown and are even affected by severe contractions due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

She noted that in the third trimester, Vietnam’s GDP expanded 2.62% in contrast to the same period in 2019, the lowest growth since 2011.

The official pointed out that from January to September, even amid the convulsed scenario created by Covid-19, Vietnam’s industry and construction sector grew 3.08% altogether and contributed more than 58 percentage units to the increase of the GDP.

Meanwhile, the agroforestry-fishing sector grew 1.84%, but it made a major contribution to GDP (13.62%).

She added that during the period, exports of goods and services increased 0.9%, and in their relation with imports, they reported a surplus of more than 14 billion dollars (the largest sum for a similar period over the past five years).
