Cultural heritage of Cuban colonial city is safeguardedRehabilitation projects of neighborhoods, public spaces and high-value buildings, together with the strategy of contributing to the economic development of the territory through preservation, are among its objectives, said Master Duznel Zerquera. Safeguarding the constructive typology of the city and ensuring that its inhabitants live in harmony with these attributes is one of the greatest challenges, said Zerquera, who is in charge of this office, created on February 28, 1997.

Independencia Street, in the third village founded by the Spaniards in Cuba, benefited from the work of this office, which, in the opinion of its director, does not renounce to support social programs.

One of the educational facilities that benefited from this endeavor was the Pepito Tey elementary school, despite the impact of the US economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba and the crisis caused by Covid-19, he said.

Cultural heritage of Cuban colonial city is safeguardedWithin the strategic line of the Curator’s Office is also its contribution to the rehabilitation of the building, of high patrimonial value, where the Guerrillerito del Escambray daycare center is located.

It also works on the reconstruction of houses in the town of San Pedro, using mud and straw techniques, which ensures the preservation of this element of vernacular architecture and improves people’s quality of life.

Trinidad, together with Valle de los Ingenios and the emblematic Manaca-Iznaga tower, was declared a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988.
