The president of the Association of Doctors and other professionals graduated in Cuba, Tania Saavedra, informed about the contributions received, the acquisition of medical supplies and the shipment of a first contribution of 93,000 syringes.

She spoke at a virtual meeting also attended by the heads of the Peru-Cuba National Solidarity Movement, Nicolas Aguilar, and the ‘Raices Mambisas’ Association of Cuban Residents in Peru, Lazara Ortega.

The three institutions promoted the campaign to collect funds for the acquisition of syringes, and invited the Cuban Consul to Peru Ana Damarys Rodriguez to the meeting.

On the occasion, they informed that the collection of funds allowed exceeding the goal of 100,000 syringes for the Cuban people and they decided to raise it to 150,000.

Nicolas Aguilar said that the new sum was chosen because it was the same as the number of Cubans who, along with historic leader Fidel Castro, donated blood for the population affected by the devastating earthquake that shook Peru in May 1970, and the donations were brought by the first Cuban medical brigade to Peru.

‘It is our way of breaking the US illegal and criminal blockade, which has been maintained against Cuba for six decades,’ Aguilar commented.

Other Cuban healthcare brigades arrived in Peru to assist the victims of the earthquake that affected the southern region of Ica and in 2007 to those affected by the heavy rainfalls of 2017 and in 2020 to fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.
