The Cuban ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and Head of Mission to the European Union, Norma Goicochea Estenoz, denounced during the Council’s meeting the devastating effects of this genocidal policy on the Caribbean island. The diplomat emphasized the tightening of the blockade in the context of Covid-19, with the aim of destabilizing the country politically, despite calls by prominent international figures to suspend sanctions during the confrontation against the pandemic.

A resolution, adopted unanimously by the OACPS Council of Ministers reiterates its support for the one approved by the United Nations General Assembly on June 23.

In the document, the Organization of African, Caribbean and Pacific States expresses concern about the significant damage that this criminal policy causes to the Cuban people and society, as well as its extraterritorial effects after the coming into effect of Title III of Helms-Burton Act.

The text recognizes that despite difficulties brought by the blockade, Cuba continues to express its international solidarity, shown through cooperation with other countries to face the pandemic.

The resolution expresses its full support for and solidarity with the Cuban people and Government, and its determined opposition to the ‘unilateral and illegal economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States.
