UNHCR calls for end of forcible returns of Afghan migrants

Geneva, Aug 17 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on Tuesday called for the end of the forcible return of Afghan migrants due to the existing instability and insecurity in that country.

Through a statement, the UNHCR warned about the humanitarian emergency situation in tha nation and called for the suspension of mandatory returns of those people, even though it had been previously decided that they did not need international protection.

We are concerned about the risk of human rights violations against civilians in this context, including women, girls and those who were somehow linked to the Afghan government, international organizations or military forces, according to the statement.

It also notes that, since early this year, the conflict has internally displaced more than 550,000 Afghans and warns about a possible migration crisis due to the worsening of the situation after the victory of the Taliban movement.

States have the legal and moral responsibility to allow those who are fleeing Afghanistan to ask for protection, without being subject to forcible return processes, the statement points out.
