Hit by political crisis, parties hold primary elections in Peru

Lima, Nov 29 (Prensa Latina) With minimal citizen turnout and little direct democracy, Peruvian political parties are holding internal elections this Sunday, which may show the level of their crisis, with a view to the general elections of 2021.

Only 1,641,815 registered militants in 24 parties, out of a total of 25,287,954 elligible to vote, are participating in today’s voting, organized by the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE).

The small number is evidence of the crisis hitting the parties and the low support that citizens have for them, aggravated in the case of those who currently have parliamentary representation, marked in its great majority by the rejection of the citizens, expressed in recent massive protests.

These mobilizations, which resulted in two deaths, rejected the congressional decision to remove President Martin Vizcarra from office on November 9; he was then replaced by questioned conservative politician Manuel Merino, who had to resign six days later forced by general repudiation.

This recent crisis has put a big question mark over the electoral possibilities and even over the survival of almost all the parties present in the legislative house, a fact which can be reflected in this Sunday’s primary elections.
