New demonstrations took place on Wednesday afternoon and night in the vicinity of the La Moneda palace, with clashes between police officers and participants in the protest determined to reach the presidential palace, completely surrounded by high fences for several blocks around.

As it had happened in recent days, hundreds of protesters gathered at the University of Chile headquarters, in the General Liberator Bernardo O’Higgins Avenue, where they clashed with special police forces who tried to disperse them again and again using jets of water and tear gas.

Vehicle traffic was interrupted in the Avenue, the main one of the city, as well as in other streets in the center where clashes also took place between police and protesters.

The participants of the protests insist on the resignation of the President, whom they criticize for his maneuvers to prevent the National Congress from approving a constitutional reform presented by the opposition.

This would allow millions of people to have 10 percent of their retirement savings deposited in pension fund insurance companies, to face the economic and social crisis exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic, in the absence of sufficient and timely aid from the government.

But the president challenged that initiative before the Constitutional Court, claiming that it violates the institutional order, which has been widely criticized in broad political and social sectors.
