The initiative is led by deputies Jaime Mulet, president of the Social Green Regionalist Federation, and Rodrigo Gonzalez, of the Party for Democracy, with the support of independent legislators and the Socialist, Communist and Radical parties.

As reported by biobio.cl, the project is based on the fact that due to the economic and social crisis exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic, a Government and a National Congress with response capacity and a high level of legitimacy is needed, ‘qualities that current authorities are lacking or are very weakened.’

The request adds that the results of the plebiscite of October 25th in which the approval and the constitutional convention option reached 78 and 79 percent, respectively, evidenced a deep distrust of the citizens in political institutions, especially in the President of the Republic and the National Congress.

This is due to the inability to resolve the great transformations and demands for social justice that have accumulated over many years, which requires a change in political actors.

The promoters of the initiative propose a great democratic agreement to advance the elections of the President, the Senate and the Chamber as ‘a necessary and generous step to legitimize the democratic system and allow the widest participation of the people in the process that we are experiencing.’

Deputy Mulet himself expressed a harsh criticism of President Sebastian Piñera, stating that ‘he is doing the task badly as he has done in these three years. He best step aside.’
