Covid-19: Lockdown suggested in US

Washington, Nov 12 (Prensa Latina) The United States must be set financially to face a month-long lockdown in an effort to get the coronavirus pandemic under control, according to a senior Democratic adviser.

Dr. Michael Osterholm said the country has the conditions to pay for a package covering all wages, lost wages of individual workers, losses of small and medium-sized businesses, city states and county governments.

Dr. Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, stated there are several ideas in terms of public perception of ‘what a lockdown is all about.’

‘If we did that, then we could issue a four-to-six week lockdown,’ he said, ‘we could reduce the numbers as did in Asia, New Zealand and Australia. And then we could really see ourselves navigating the availability of the vaccine in the first and second quarter of next year.

That could bring economy recovery back, as President-elect Joe Biden pledged to end the coronavirus and ‘listen to the scientists’ to get it under control.

‘Dealing with the coronavirus pandemic is one of the most important battles our administration will face, and I will be informed by science and experts,’ said Biden, who named Ron Klain, a close collaborator in the fight against Ebola, as his chief of staff.
