The consensus will end a 15-year disagreement over whether to recognize the height of the snow or the rock of the highest mountain peak in the entire world as its official elevation, The Kathmandu Post reported.

According to the Department of Topography, the height of Everest has been measured by different Indian, US and European surveyors on different dates in the past.

The idea of remeasuring the so-called ‘Roof of the World’ arose again when scientific claims indicated that the height of the famous mountain could be altered by the 2015 earthquake.

And while Nepal began measuring the height of Everest in 2017, China did so in 2019 following President Xi Jinping’s visit to Kathmandu. During his stay in Nepal, both countries agreed to jointly announce the new height of the mountain.

Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, the announcement will be made separately in Kathmandu and Beijing.
