China rejects interference in disqualification of Hong Kong lawmakers

Beijing, Nov 12 (Prensa Latina) China on Friday rejected accusations and threats of sanctions from the West due to the disqualification of four opposition lawmakers in Hong Kong, and noted that the action will protect the 'One country, two systems' principle.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Wang Wenbin told reporters that those powers have neither reason nor authority to criticize China by making arbitrary and inappropriate statements.

He noted that China’s sovereignty over the special administrative region of Hong Kong, its authority on the eligibility of the members of the Legislative Council and any other matter there are purely domestic affairs.

Wang recalled that swearing loyalty to the State is an international practice and even in nations like the United States and the United Kingdom, whoever refuses to do so is disqualified to be a parliamentarian.

‘No country should ignore the acts of treason by public servants, including lawmakers who break their oath and betray their country,’ Wang stressed.

The spokesman defended the decision and noted the need to keep and protect the ‘One country, two systems’ principle, and predicted the failure of any efforts to pressure China about the issue.
