Elections in Jordan marred by Covid-19

Amman, Nov 10 (Prensa Latina) Just over 4.5 million people in Jordan were voting on Tuesday for the election of a Parliament, under the shadow of the Covid-19 pandemic.

More than 50 thousand agents guarded the polls and forced the use of masks and maintain physical distance.

The authorities agreed on the need for continuity of the election fair, except for those who tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus and must remain in quarantine, under penalty of one year in prison.

Parliament has limited authority in Jordan, as King Abdullah has broad powers to rule by decree, although there are some windows open to opposition.

This year, the most important opposition faction, the Islamic Action Front (IAF), the political arm of the Muslim Brotherhood, presented its candidates.

In 2016, the IAF won 16 seats out of 130 in the parliament, after boycotting the 2010 and 2013 elections.

Left-wing and Arab nationalist groups are also in the running, along with independent aspirants, many of them representatives of tribes loyal to the monarchy.
